February 2010 Annual Meeting

 The Washington State Chapter Annual Meeting was held February 6 2010 at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, with about 40 people in attendance.

President Jill Stephenson started he meeting at 10:15 AM with the announcement that Tim Underwood will turn over the newsletter Worthy of Notice (WON) to new co-editors John Orthmann and Layne Corneliuson.  

Robert Heacock and John also described the process by which two bicentennial dugout canoes were donated to Sacajawea State Park by the Chapter, one canoe by the Chapter and one by John and Layne.  

Linda Underwood will proceed with securing Chapter name tags for $10 and many signed up at the meeting.  

Rob also encouraged everyone to get their email address to him, as we do intend to use email to supplement our WON newsletter 

Barb Kubik reminded us of the Foundation Annual Meeting to be held in Lewiston Idaho this August 1-4 and that registration info should be in the mail this week. 

Wendy Raney provided us with a new book ‘Across the Endless River’ by Thad Carhart (Doubleday), an account of Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau’s time in Europe. The book was auctioned off in a silent auction to Doc Wesselius. 

Mention was also made of the cooperative agreement between the Foundation and the Boy Scouts of America, and that will enhance our ability to with them.    

Barb also announced that the Governors Lewis and Clark Committee will be meeting at 1:30 PM today.     

It was also announce that long time member Ralph Rudeen has died and that his wife Jackie will be having her birthday tomorrow and a birthday card was circulated.

Larry McClure is co-president of the Oregon Chapter and also Secretary of the Foundation, and introduced new member Hal Stokes of Lynwood who also is in the Oregon Chapter. Larry mentioned that February 20 at Lewis and Clark College in Portland will be a program featuring Dr Gary Moulton, Dr Steven Beckham and Roger Wendlick   For more information see the Oregon Chapter website.  

He also mentioned that Lorna Hainsworth who recently published an article on a lost letter by Captain Lewis is available in late March for presentations. Larry also encouraged all members to assist where they can and to help at the Annual Meeting in Lewiston.  

He also mentioned that Dr. Stephen Forrest is the new Director of Operations and Membership Services of the National LCTHF Foundation. 

Chapter elections were held and all positions were renewed by acclimation.  

Nick Giovanni introduced Jennifer Fyllingness, who is the niece of Wilma Clark, who’s husband is descended from William Clark, but named after George Rogers Clark. Jennifer described various heirlooms and furniture, including a large portrait of George Rogers Clark. 

We were then privileged to hear from John Jackson who explained the research that has gone into his latest book about Captain Lewis.  He also read portions of the text and answered questions, and we had a subsequent discussion of Captain Lewis.  

The meeting then ended at 12:00  

Board Meeting

The Annual Board meeting for the Washington State Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, Inc was held February 6, 2010 at 1:00 PM in the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma. Present were President Jill Stephenson, and also Murray Hayes, Nick Giovanni, Doc Wesselius, Robert Heacock, Kim Fitzsimmons, John Orthmann, also present were Lee Edtl, Barb Kubik, and Jim Sayce. 

We discussed that the Chapter newsletter Worthy of Notice (WON) will be produced in digital form in the future, which will enhance our ability to keep our website up to date. 

Future meeting sites and themes were discussed, and we hope to have our spring trip determined soon.  The date of May 1 will not work as that is National History Day judging in Bellevue.  

The Foundations Annual meeting will be in August in Lewiston, Idaho and the Chapter will assist in that.
